How Timex Turned Pre-Orders into a Repeatable Growth Channel
Goal
To turn high-demand launches and collaborations into a repeatable growth channel by using pre-orders to bring forward their selling window and capture revenue earlier, and confidently sell more than the initial stock.
Background
Since 1854, Timex built its brand on making well-crafted watches for generations of customers. Today, that legacy continues through high-attention launches, limited-edition collaborations, and cultural moments that introduce Timex to new audiences and drive fast-moving spikes in demand.
For launches like these, timing is critical. Shopper excitement peaks fast, but if inventory sells out too early, that momentum can disappear just as fast. A “Sold Out” message can mean missed revenue, lost demand visibility, and a shorter window to convert interest into customers. Timex needed a reliable way to keep selling during peak demand moments to drive revenue, allowing them to understand real customer demand sooner than ever.
"Preorders build buzz around big moments. Particularly for notable collaborations, it gets new people to our site who may not have heard of Timex before, but who may now buy another Timex product." - Kyle Vassallo, Senior Manager, Global DTC Operations and FLD Brands

The SolutionTurning Launch Hype Into a Repeatable Revenue Channel
A prime example of Timex’s pre-order strategy in action was the Timex x Superman Marlin Jet Automatic watch, a limited-edition collaboration that created a clear opportunity to launch before inventory arrived, and understand the full scope of demand sooner.
For the Timex team, the question wasn’t whether excitement would be high. It was how to keep selling while that excitement was at its peak, instead of letting demand disappear.
Purple Dot gave Timex the pre-order platform to turn launch demand into real orders before stock reached the warehouse, and through to a next allocation. Instead of managing pre-orders through manual workarounds or adding pressure to internal teams, Timex could use Purple Dot to clearly show the product was available for pre-order, communicate expected ship dates, process customer orders, and keep the buying experience clear from checkout through fulfillment.
By launching the watch on pre-order powered by Purple Dot, Timex was able to sell nearly 50% of incoming stock on the very first day of pre-order, creating immediate revenue momentum at the start of a ninety-day campaign that continued converting demand into sales.
For Timex, pre-orders became more than a way to manage a single launch. They became a repeatable growth channel for turning collaborations, cultural moments, and unpredictable demand spikes into measurable revenue without adding operational complexity or customer experience risk.
"Purple Dot has exceeded our expectations." - Kyle Vassallo, Senior Manager, Global DTC Operations and FLD Brands

The resultsTurning Hype Into Revenue
By strategically using pre-orders, Timex was able to turn the Superman launch into a broader press moment and build buzz. Filmmaker James Gunn, whose name was etched on the back of the watch case, posted on social media encouraging fans to pre-order the limited edition item, driving a clear spike in traffic.
Purple Dot’s easy integration into their system meant Timex experienced no disruption to their existing workflows with this surge of demand. Instead of shoppers hitting a dead end with the dreaded “Notify Me When In Stock” button, customers could buy confidently. They received clear ship dates and transparent communication at every touchpoint, building trust and minimizing support tickets and cancellations.
Building on that success, in their first 5 months with Purple Dot, Timex generated over $1M in pre-order revenue, making pre-orders a repeatable growth channel. In the future, Timex plans to use Purple Dot for forecasting, to help minimize inventory risk, and to expand their pre-order strategy across additional products and international markets using Purple Dot’s robust and real-time insights.
For Timex, pre-orders are not just a workaround– they are a strategic mainstay. This is the difference between pre-orders being a panic-only moment and having the infrastructure to scale them whenever it matters most.
In summary this means Timex now has a pre-order workflow with:
- No added burden on customer support
- Clear ship dates that reduce cancellations and customer confusion
- Backorders continue selling instead of losing demand
- Ops team stay in control, even when supply chain timelines shift
- The ability to update ship dates, and the system automatically updates it across every customer touchpoint
Beyond Superman: Pre-Orders as a Core Sales Strategy
The Timex x Superman launch wasn’t a one-off success.
Timex now regularly uses pre-orders to:
- Convert demand spikes for collaborations
- Never truly go out of stock for backorders
- Mitigate the impact of any supply chain delays on their core products
- Turn peak demand into a growth channel
And more.
