Given the rapid penetration of the Internet and the growing popularity of online blogshops around the world, more and more people are turning to cross-border e-commerce to fulfill their shopping needs. Let’s begin by asking: what is cross-border e-commerce?

According to our media partner Parcel Monitor, cross-border e-commerce simply refers to the buying and selling of goods across borders via online stores or marketplaces. Ever since the start of the pandemic, the global cross-border e-commerce market has experienced unprecedented growth, and is estimated to surpass USD 1508700 million by 2027. In light of this, Parcel Monitor has recently released an article covering insights on how the cross-border markets around the world have evolved in recent years. The study also features some interesting data from research consultancy Transport Intelligence.

Key findings of the report include:

  • North America has a relatively smaller cross-border e-commerce segment in comparison to other regions, taking up only 14% of its total online purchases in 2021.
  • The United States (US) was the largest revenue contributor to North America’s cross-border market last year. This could likely be the result of the recent investments in outbound fulfillment operations in the US.
  • Germany contributed to 28.5% of Europe’s cross-border market share.
  • A Eurostat survey revealed that 32% of European customers have purchased goods from other EU nations over the past year.
  • China made up 56.4% of APAC’s total cross-border value.

  • Cross-border e-commerce in China increased by 31.1% year-on-year, mainly due to the maturity of the landscape, as well as the existence of warehouses and logistics networks located overseas.
