Meet Our Exhibitors: Lucas van der Schalk, CEO at Corplex

As we near the launch of this year’s eCommerce Expo and Technology for Marketing, Lucas van der Schalk, CEO at circular plastics solution provider Corplex highlights the biggest trends and challenges within eCommerce and marketing and what’s exciting him the most in those industries right now.

What industry trends are you looking forward to seeing at this year’s eCommerce Expo and Technology for Marketing?

As someone within the reusable plastics industry, I’m looking forward to seeing how companies are moving away from single-use packaging to more sustainable and lower waste alternatives.

What are the biggest challenges facing eCommerce retailers heading into Q4 and peak season?

Finding a way to ensure returns are as easy to complete as receipts. The logical option is to use multi-use packaging but the infrastructure for such concepts needs to be put in place and promoted politically.

What is most exciting to you about the eCommerce and digital marketing industry right now?

The opportunity for the introduction of deposit return schemes and other measures to increase customer loyalty through providing more sustainable and lower waste packaging alternatives.

Why is it important to bring the industry together at events like eCommerce Expo and Technology for Marketing?

It allows for new innovations to be viewed and discussed. It also allows for agreements on setting out a roadmap for the sustainable use of packaging and ensuring we do not unnecessarily squander our resources through single-use packaging.

What’s the best piece of advice you would give to new people joining the industry?

Recycling is deemed to be the saviour of the eCommerce packaging industry, but really it is reuse. We all hate the huge amounts of packaging waste and we placate ourselves by stating it is recycled, however recycling 1 Tonne of cardboard generates 450 Kg of CO2! If we reused the materials we would generate less than a 10th of that. Moreover recycling one tonne of plastic generates only 180 Kgs of CO2, so reuse plastic boxes and only recycle them after a long life of use.
